MAGA militia hold 35 rallies outside state capitol buildings. At first, they do not attempt to go inside. But then, angry and frustrated, they muscle their way past security. The media reports three deaths and generally calls it another “insurrection.” Fox News hesitatingly calls it a “protest.” Far right-wing news outlets like One America News Network call it a “liberation.”

It’s hard to tear yourself away from the news coverage on your phone. With their capitol buildings overrun, governors call for national backup. President Biden, backed by President-elect Harris, invokes the Insurrection Act to remove MAGA protesters from the state capitol buildings. In some Republican-led states, MAGA protesters are greeted warmly by state legislators. MAGA protestors set up a long-term occupation of several capitol buildings, with demands that their state send Trump-supportive electors to certify the election — which would (illegally) swing the election to Trump.

Antifa groups show up at some capitol buildings and engage in violent confrontations with MAGA supporters. By the first night, eight state capitol buildings are still held hostage by MAGA groups. Donald Trump urges his supporters: “Free our country!”
